Fly Fishing Coach Offering

I've been a mentor and coach for many years, mostly with personal life and business. I now offer fly fishing coaching, to help beginners and others to improve their skills:

1. Fly Fishing 101- rod/reel/line selection, line/leader setup, flies and which ones, casting and fishing techniques ...per person $100

2. Casting Instruction- learn or improve your casting skills. Instruction includes gear if necessary, covers overhead and roll casting.
1/2 hour $40 per hour $75

3. One-on-One Bennett Spring Excursion- we'll meet at in Prairie Village, 6am, and travel to Bennett Spring State Park. After a two hour instructional time, we'll fish together, with me coaching you on how to fish better and how to know where to find fish. Includes gear if needed, and lunch $350

A fish, and a new friend...

I had some time to fish while in RI this week, so I went to the Wood River.  After 'gearing up', I started to the river, when a fellow walked up and explained that he had recently gotten a fly rod, for father's day, I think, and wondered if he could just watch me fish.  I told him, 'sure', and we headed off to the bank.  As we reached the edge of the stream, I stopped and said, "you can watch, but how about I give you some things to think about?" I spent a little while explaining some of the basics of fly fishing, so that he could get off to a better start. Then I showed him a spot in a riffle where I expected a fish to be.  I waded in, and on the second cast, a well-placed foam beetle produced a beautiful 16" rainbow.  My new friend, Jonathan, was a excited as I, because he got to see the fish caught and netted, live and real.  He is hooked now, and I expect on the river as I write this post.  We get back what we give...I believe that my willingness to give him some time allowed me to connect with my goal.  Life is good, especially when you can share.

Euro Nymphing? Yeah!

I had the privilege this week of fishing with my new friend, Roger Maves of "AskAboutFlyFishing.com", a popular fly fishing blog.  I had listened to several podcasts about czech and european nymphing styles, and the concept intrigued me.  So...I tied on a new 1X leader, then a strip of Rio Indicator Sighter, about 24", then 4' of 5X tippet, to which I attached my fly.  We were fishing the North Fork of the South Platte River in Colorado, and I was working a fast run just around a smooth corner.  About the third time I worked the fly through the feeding lane, I noticed the sighter twitch a little, so I lifted the rod and set the hook.  Fish on!  I fought a very nice rainbow for several minutes and managed to get the fish almost to the net, when my hook straightened and the fish was gone.  But-I was convinced.  I think, as many do, that we miss many of the times when trout suck in our flies, test them, then spit them out.  We just don't see the 'take' using a traditional indicator.  I recommend a book by Jason Randall, Nymph Masters: fly-fishing Secrets From Expert Anglers, from Stackpole books. Jason does a great job in the book helping us to understand about stream hydraulics and why we miss so many fish, and talks about the different styles of nymphing.  Try the podcasts on Askaboutflyfishing.com, you won't be dissapointed.

Fly tying materials checklist

Many times, I go to the fly shop, and can't remember what I needed to buy for tying materials.  I then purchase too much or items I didn't need.  I put together a fly tying materials checklist, so maybe you can use it as well.  enjoy...go fishing!
