After 'gearing up', I started to the river, when a fellow walked up and explained that he had recently gotten a fly rod, for father's day, I think, and wondered if he could just watch me fish. I told him, 'sure', and we headed off to the bank. As we reached the edge of the stream, I stopped and said, "you can watch, but how about I give you some things to think about?" I spent a little while explaining some of the basics of fly fishing, so that he could get off to a better start. Then I showed him a spot in a riffle where I expected a fish to be. I waded in, and on the second cast, a well-placed foam beetle produced a beautiful 16" rainbow. My new friend, Jonathan, was a excited as I, because he got to see the fish caught and netted, live and real. He is hooked now, and I expect on the river as I write this post. We get back what we give...I believe that my willingness to give him some time allowed me to connect with my goal. Life is good, especially when you can share.
God bless...keep the rod bent.
Yeah!I had the privilege this week of fishing with my new friend, Roger Maves of "AskAboutFlyFishing.com", a popular fly fishing blog. I had listened to several podcasts about czech and european nymphing styles, and the concept intrigued me. So...I tied on a new 1X leader, then a strip of Rio Indicator Sighter, about 24", then 4' of 5X tippet, to which I attached my fly. We were fishing the North Fork of the South Platte River in Colorado, and I was working a fast run just around a smooth corner. About the third time I worked the fly through the feeding lane, I noticed the sighter twitch a little, so I lifted the rod and set the hook. Fish on! I fought a very nice rainbow for several minutes and managed to get the fish almost to the net, when my hook straightened and the fish was gone. But-I was convinced. I think, as many do, that we miss many of the times when trout suck in our flies, test them, then spit them out. We just don't see the 'take' using a traditional indicator. I recommend a book by Jason Randall, Nymph Masters: fly-fishing Secrets From Expert Anglers, from Stackpole books. Jason does a great job in the book helping us to understand about stream hydraulics and why we miss so many fish, and talks about the different styles of nymphing. Try the podcasts on Askaboutflyfishing.com, you won't be dissapointed.
Spring is coming, and I am getting ready to turn up the heat on my fishing. I have spent some time at the bench, getting some favorite flies tied to use. I'm on my way to the Lower Mountain Fork, Broken Bow, OK in a couple of weeks.
The ponds were mostly still frozen, and hard to fish, but we had a good day out, and I had a nice discussion with a fellow angler. That is one of my favorite things about fishing- good people, always willing to talk about what we love and share ideas.
I went for the first time last year, and found it to be informative, interesting, and cool. I met some icons in the industry, and saw some great sessions as well. It was great to meet John Gierach, Dave Whitlock and A.K. Best, guys I look up to. If you haven't been, you should go, it will be worth the trip.
Not too long ago, I had the fortune to catch some 18" fat rainbows that were so strong that I had to chase them downsteam to keep from loosing them. Great fun!!!

In a couple of weeks, my grandson and I will try the Eleven Mile Canyon for the first time, and I can't wait. It is supposed to be a very good dry fly area, and this time of year some terrestrials should be hopping as well (pun intended). Come back for my report and pics.
You bet! I had a keynote to do in Albuquerque, so I went a day early, hoping to fish in the north. I called High Desert Angler in Santa Fe, and helpfully, he told me to try the Rio Chama, below Abiquiu Dam. I'm always up for a new spot, so off I go...and I'll return, as well. The Chama is a charming small stream, with plenty of access below the dam. It was very cold that day, and I had to keep 'dipping the rod' to get ice off the guides, but I managed to find one new friend- one of the greenest brown trout I have caught. I was fishing a San Juan worm with a red midge (18), and the trout took the midge. Great fight, great fish, I'm doing back!
I could fish in a creek in Valley Forge Park, Valley Creek, home to native browns and rainbows, I'm told a beautiful little stream to fish. As I am packing, I'm thinking, "what about sundown?" I realized that I wouldn't be able to get on the stream until about 5pm, and right now, that is the time that Ol Sol is setting in the west. Pfffffttt! Oh, well, next time.
I get to fish a lot, but it is usually alone. There is something special about spending a few days with people you appreciate, eating with them, telling stories, getting to know each other better. We caught some fish, in fact the trout in the Ruby seem to be very robust, healthy, strong. I really enjoyed the 'game' of enticing them to the net. The water was somewhat stained, making it a little difficult for the fish to see, but still I managed to have success. Again, the Prince Nymph and the San Juan worm prevailed! I tried a new form of the San Juan, with a bead in the middle, and the fish reacted well. I think it may have helped in the stained water.
be well...keep the rod bent
This week, I had the fortune to be in Philly, so I took an extra day to fish in the Lehigh Vally, around Allentown. The Little Lehigh Creek flows across farms, meadows, parks and yards to merge with the Lehigh River. It is stocked in some areas, and has two special 'fly-fishing only' areas as well. You might want to visit the Heritage Fly Shop off Fish Hatchery Rd, in a stream house run by a very nice guy, Ron. Some wild, some stocked, a dream to fish.
...keep the rod bent...
It seems that I can always catch a trout on a zebra midge, red or black, wherever I go. It amazes me that big trout eat such a little creature, but they do. Easy to tie, easy to fish, the go-to fly.
